Valentino Rossi's Emotional Plea for Phillip Island's MotoGP Future
The iconic Phillip Island circuit, a cherished part of MotoGP's history, faces an uncertain future as its contract with the Victorian Government expires this year. The championship promoter, Dorna, is exploring new avenues, with Albert Park emerging as a potential replacement. This shift has sparked concern among fans and riders alike, including the legendary Valentino Rossi.
Rossi, an eight-time winner at Phillip Island, expressed his disappointment, stating, 'It's a shame because Phillip Island is a piece of history of MotoGP.' He reminisced about his early days in racing, recalling his first year at Eastern Creek and the subsequent move to Phillip Island in 1997. 'It's a fantastic track, it’s really special, and it’s different than the other track,' he emphasized.
The Italian rider further highlighted the track's unique charm, drawing a parallel to Bathurst. 'We can say that it’s a little bit like Bathurst, so it’s a great shame if they stop with Phillip Island.'
As Phillip Island's contract nears its end, the Australian motorcycle racing landscape faces a pivotal moment. The South Australian Government has shown interest in hosting a race at The Bend, while there's also a possibility of Australia losing a race entirely. Rossi's presence in Australia for the Bathurst 12 Hour further underscores the importance of these discussions.
'I hope that they continue in Phillip Island,' Rossi passionately stated, emphasizing the track's enduring appeal. His retirement from motorcycle racing in 2021 and subsequent switch to four-wheel racing in the Bathurst 12 Hour only add to the emotional weight of his plea for the preservation of Phillip Island's place in MotoGP history.
