Honoring Dr. King's Legacy, Shaping Baseball's Future
The DREAM Series, a premier camp held over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, focuses on the art of pitching and catching while paying tribute to Dr. King's enduring legacy. Recently, the ninth edition of this camp took place at the Los Angeles Angels' Spring Training site in Tempe, Arizona. It was a gathering of current and former professional players, including Jo Adell and Howie Kendrick, who, alongside a seasoned group of coaches, dedicated their time to shaping the future of the sport.
A Diverse Talent Pool, A Bright Future
The four-day camp brought together 80 athletes, predominantly African American, aged 14 to 18, from various corners of North America. From the quiet town of Sterlington, Louisiana, to the vibrant Bronx in New York City, these athletes showcased their talent and commitment to the game. Many have already committed to playing baseball at the next level, with an impressive 27 out of the 80 players earning DI offers and pledging to some of the country's top programs.
Development Beyond the Diamond
The camp offered a holistic approach to development, combining workouts, expert coaching, off-field seminars, and the Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) Performance Assessment. This assessment utilized cutting-edge technology to evaluate cognitive skills, processing speed, athletic performance, and on-field talent. It's a comprehensive process that aims to refine skills, nurture character growth, and provide key takeaways for athletes and coaches alike.

USA Baseball caught up with four athletes and one coach to delve deeper into their experiences. Here's a glimpse into their journeys:
Tyson Bobo, RHP, Class of 2026, San Diego, Calif.: Tyson used the DREAM Series to refine his pitching skills before heading to Texas Tech. A versatile utility player, he led his team in home runs and ranked second in RBI during his junior year. Tyson's journey from San Diego to Phoenix showcases his dedication to improving his craft.
Brandon Williams, C/RHP, Class of 2028, Elk Grove, Calif.: At just 16, Brandon's physical presence is impressive. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 205 pounds, he moves with agility and is focused on honing his receiving skills under the guidance of coaches like Tom Gregorio and World Series champion Mike Sciosia. Brandon's freshman year stats speak for themselves, with a .320 batting average and 31 hits, including 12 extra-base knocks.
Paris Head, INF/RHP, Class of 2029, Chicago, Ill.: At 14, Paris is already a seasoned competitor. He played on the 2023 USA Baseball 12U National Team, winning the World Cup. Paris attends Lane Tech College Prep High School, whose baseball program recently claimed an Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Regional Title. His performance at DREAM Series left a lasting impression.
Deuce Jenkins, OF, Class of 2027, Brandon, Miss.: Deuce, a Mississippi native, has extensive experience with MLB Develops and USA Baseball, having participated in three consecutive DREAM Series. His leadership and statistical dominance in school, including a low ERA and multiple home runs, position him for a stellar senior campaign.
Mike Harkey, DREAM Series Coach: Initiatives like DREAM Series offer a unique opportunity for coaches to give back to the sport they love. Former professional player and World Series champion Mike Harkey emphasizes the value of these experiences, not just for athletes but also for setting a foundation for the next generation of baseball stars.
