Located in Central Brooklyn's East Flatbush, the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center stands tall as a three-story structure, its rippled brick facade creating a unique and inviting presence. The building, nestled between a public school and a center lot, features a transparent main entrance that welcomes visitors with a warm embrace. Large arched windows, set within the gently curved brick walls, reinforce this welcoming atmosphere, allowing natural light to flood the interior.
But here's where it gets interesting: the building's facade isn't just aesthetically pleasing; it serves a dual purpose. Studio Gang's design intentionally creates a swooping, dipped look, which not only makes a bold statement but also maximizes natural light and views into the building. It's a clever way to bring the outdoors in, creating a bright and vibrant atmosphere.
Inside, the recreation center boasts a double-height gymnasium and pool, with smaller spaces for various activities and offices winding between them. Cutaways, viewing platforms, and interior windows offer a unique perspective, allowing users to connect with the entire space. The bright-orange grand staircase in the lobby adds a pop of color, while glued-laminated timber beams, custom woodwork, and artwork by Vanessa German bring a touch of warmth and creativity.
And this is the part most people miss: the building's upper levels are clad in corrugated metal panels, peaking over the brick volume at the front. It's a subtle yet powerful contrast, adding to the building's overall character.
The recreation center also boasts a green roof, an outdoor school yard, and a small triangular terrace above its entrance. It's a sustainable design, aiming for LEED Gold certification, with features like a high-performance envelope, stormwater management plantings, and EV-charging integration.
This project replaces a field that once stood in its place, but it maintains several outdoor basketball and handball courts for the community. It's a true community hub, offering a range of activities and spaces for all.
