The NCCN 2026 Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, brought together over a thousand oncology professionals, with hundreds more joining virtually. This event showcased the latest advancements in cancer care, with a focus on global strategies and operational excellence. The conference highlighted the alarming rise in cancer incidence among younger adults, emphasizing the need for multidisciplinary, holistic care and education within the healthcare community.
One of the key takeaways from the conference is the growing burden of cancer worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The panel discussed the rising cancer rates and the disproportionate number of deaths occurring in these regions, despite only 5% of global cancer funding being allocated to them. This disparity presents a significant opportunity for impact, with standardizing treatments and upscaling prevention measures like HPV vaccination and screening being highlighted as potential solutions.
The conference also emphasized the importance of collaboration and resource sharing. The African Cancer Coalition, American Cancer Society (ACS), and NCCN's joint effort in creating the International Adaptations of the NCCN Guidelines for Sub-Saharan Africa is a testament to the power of teamwork. Similarly, the NCCN Guidelines Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Editions, a collaboration with the Ministry of National Guard-Health Affairs (Saudi Arabia), showcases the potential for global impact through collective action.
In addition to the global cancer care strategies, the conference also addressed operational excellence in cancer care. NCCN introduced an educational track on best practices for oncology program operations, covering topics such as the role of guidelines in addressing systemic and practical challenges, optimizing academic/community collaborations, artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and governance, and policy insights.
The conference featured over 300 original research abstracts, covering a wide range of topics, including best practices, bioinformatics, case studies, clinical oncology, correlative/genomic research, epidemiology, outcomes, pre-clinical oncology, quality improvement, and trials in progress. The event also included expert-guided tours of posters, where top abstracts were presented as talks, and past NCCN Foundation Young Investigator Award winners shared their research.
The NCCN Cancer Care Equity Program's pilot project, utilizing the Health Equity Report Card, was also showcased, aiming to assess and promote equitable practices in community care settings. The conference also provided updates on clinical guidelines for various cancer types, including gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, hematologic, and skin cancers, as well as case study discussions for breast and non-small cell lung cancers.
Looking ahead, the NCCN Annual Conference will be held in San Diego, California, from Friday, March 19 to Sunday, March 21, 2027. This shift to a new location promises to bring fresh insights and perspectives to the cancer care community, further advancing the fight against cancer on a global scale.
