The Murray Street Bridge in Santa Cruz is back open, but the traffic chaos might just be getting started!
Drivers in Santa Cruz are experiencing a bit of a headache this week as the Murray Street Bridge has been reopened to two-way traffic. This means one lane is now open in each direction, a change that's sparking quite a bit of debate and frustration among those navigating the area.
"It was a total zoo...people were honking, people were blocking the intersection...everybody was frustrated," shared Keith Schnaible, owner of Seabright Construction, who's located near the bridge. He expressed his bewilderment at the new traffic flow, adding, "I don't know who came up with it...sometimes I feel like in this city they hate cars and they want to make everyone with one feel the pain." Schnaible suggested a more conventional approach: "My idea was westbound in the AM, eastbound in the PM because that's the standard traffic...somebody got the great idea to run it both ways at peak traffic."
But here's where it gets interesting: The city explains this tweak is actually part of a pilot program designed to observe how traffic patterns adapt.
And this is the part most people miss: While some drivers are feeling the pinch, other local residents see a silver lining. They believe this new configuration could offer a much-needed boost to local businesses that have been struggling due to the ongoing construction. "I think some by way traffic is good...a little relief for the businesses...the traffic is a bit to be expected," noted one resident. They also added, "I think if you're in a hurry maybe still take another route but just to give some relief for the businesses."
This resident also acknowledged the initial bumpy ride: "It's going to be a little more traffic and a little bit of chaos probably in the beginning here until they figure it out but it's good for the businesses and probably a relief to other routes in Santa Cruz."
The Murray Street Bridge project, which kicked off last year, has a primary goal: to enhance the bridge's earthquake resistance and improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. The entire project is slated for completion in two years.
