A heated debate has emerged in Hollywood, with Ethan Hawke expressing his frustration towards Tom Cruise's influence on the industry's expectations for actors. In an interview at the Sundance Film Festival, Hawke revealed his anger towards Cruise's high-risk stunt work, which has set a new standard for actors across the board.
Hawke, known for his role in the upcoming film "The Weight," believes that Cruise's daring stunts have raised the bar, creating a perception that actors must perform their own stunts to prove their worth.
"Tom Cruise has completely transformed the industry's expectations. It's almost as if we're expected to be superheroes now," Hawke stated. "I understand the appeal of seeing actors perform their own stunts, but it's important to remember that not all films require such extreme measures."
While Cruise's action-packed career includes iconic roles in "Mission: Impossible," "Top Gun," and "Jack Reacher," Hawke's film, "The Weight," takes a different approach. Set in the 1930s, the film focuses on human resilience and survival, with stunts that are more grounded and relatable.
"In our film, the stunts are realistic and achievable. It's about the human experience, not about blowing things up or performing superhero-like feats," Hawke explained.
However, Hawke's own stunt work in "The Weight" was no walk in the park. He navigated treacherous wilderness, braved freezing waters, and engaged in intense physical scenes.
"It was a challenging experience, but it was all about telling a compelling story. The stunts were integral to the narrative, but they were within the realm of possibility," he added.
But here's where it gets controversial: Should actors be expected to perform dangerous stunts, or is it a matter of personal choice and preference?
