A shocking accusation has been leveled against Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus by none other than Bangladesh's President, Mohammed Shahabuddin. In a recent interview, the President has accused Yunus, the former chief adviser, of conspiring to overthrow him and destabilize the country's constitutional order.
But here's where it gets controversial... Shahabuddin claims that during Yunus's tenure as the interim government's chief adviser, he was kept in the dark about crucial matters of state. He alleges that Yunus failed to fulfill his constitutional obligation to communicate with the President, neither informing him of foreign visits nor briefing him on important issues.
"The chief adviser did not follow any provision of the constitution," Shahabuddin stated. "He traveled abroad multiple times without ever meeting with me or providing a written report. It's as if he deliberately avoided fulfilling his duties."
And this is the part most people miss... Shahabuddin further alleges that he was essentially a "palace prisoner" during Yunus's time in office. He claims that two of his planned foreign visits were blocked by the Yunus administration, leaving him isolated and unable to fulfill his duties as President.
When asked about the issuance of 133 ordinances during this period, Shahabuddin expressed concern about the large number, suggesting that some may have been unnecessary. He also revealed that he was unaware of the last agreement with the United States, emphasizing the importance of formal communication between the President and the interim government.
"Such state agreements should have been brought to my attention. It's a constitutional obligation, and Yunus failed to uphold it," he said.
The President's accusations don't stop there. He claims that there was even a conspiracy to replace him with a former chief justice through unconstitutional means. Thankfully, a judge refused the proposal, citing constitutional constraints.
Shahabuddin also described the protests outside the presidential residence on October 22, 2024, as a terrifying night, with mobs attempting to loot the building. The situation was eventually brought under control with military intervention.
Despite these challenges, Shahabuddin credits the Bangladeshi Army and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leadership for helping him maintain constitutional continuity. He recalls the chiefs of the three services assuring him of their loyalty and support.
"Your defeat means the defeat of the entire armed forces. We will prevent that at any cost," they told him.
